Summit’s music department has lined up a series of pieces for this year’s Veterans Day assembly on November 10th. Taking place in the gym, the assembly will showcase the stories of veterans around Summit High School and give the band and orchestra the opportunity to demonstrate their talent.
Along with the national anthem, both orchestra and band plan to perform a composition of music from every branch of the military. Their hard work and thorough rehearsal will act as a meaningful way to say thank you to everyone who has served. This particular composition also does a good job of displaying the musicians’ talent, as explained by Summit senior and band flutist Campbell Thomas.
“[The piece is] a good display of our skills as a whole and a good way for the student body to get to see band performing,” said Thomas.
Because they often play separately, it’s fairly rare to see both Summit band and orchestra together. However, since their beginner classes are now combined into one, there is more time for some of the students to rehearse as a whole.
Even prior to their shared class, the Summit music department has always been incredibly close, regardless of whether students play for orchestra or band. Sophomore orchestra violinist Morgan Julander described the entire Summit music department as a friendly community.
“We’re pretty tight knit,” said Julander.
Though the Veterans Day assembly won’t be focused only on music, it will offer an opportunity for the student body to see the music department showcase their talent as a whole and will hopefully inspire some students to get into music themselves. The assembly will act as an opportunity to see the Summit music department play side by side in respect for our country, and is definitely one worth getting excited over!
