Many years ago, hacky sacking was popular worldwide. This fun trend would eventually end, but it just might be returning. In the hallways of Summit High School, students have been playing with hacky sacks in circles during the day. The sport that was originally created in Oregon decades ago has been making a comeback in our school.
The hacky sack was invented by two men, Mike Marshall and John Stalberger, in 1972. The two popularized it by bringing their game to colleges and high schools around Oregon, which eventually spread throughout the world.
The trend of the game eventually died off, but recently, it seems to be making a comeback in our school.
“I think hacky sacking is becoming popular in part due to Mrs. Bussmann’s hacky sack club,” said sophomore Laird Jessup.
The hacky sack club is an access time choice every Tuesday for students to go to the gym and hacky sack for the period.
Another reason why hacky sacking has become more popular is because of how easy it is to play.
“I think it’s becoming more popular because anybody can play it. All you need is a hacky sack,” said sophomore Jake Mastalir.
Anyone can get access to a hacky sack, which definitely contributes to the rise in popularity. This sport is super easy to pick up, but also very hard to master. There are infinite skills and tricks that you could learn which are super fun to try.
“l enjoy hacky sacking because it is very challenging, while being fun at the same time,” said Mastalir.
According to Jessup, other people may enjoy hacky sacking because of how it can improve their coordination, especially in sports.
“It’s a fun activity that also improves my touch in soccer,” said Jessup.
On top of the infinite amount of skills and tricks, there are also unlimited games that can be played with just a small hacky sack. Many people just try to keep the sack from touching the ground while passing it to one another, but there are plenty of other uses for the hacky sack. Other popular games include HORSE, where people try to match each other’s tricks, or even hacky sack golf, where people compete against each other to hit a target. Endless games can be created, which keeps this sport from getting boring.
Hacky sacking can bring groups of people together who otherwise would have never spent time with each other. What can start with just one or two people can eventually grow into an entire circle of people playing games and having fun with one another. This seemingly simple sport can bring people together and create a community.
Hacky sacking is a very fun activity due to the creativity and endless possibilities that it brings. This approachable game can be played by anyone, and can bring people together, both reasons for why this Oregon originated sport is becoming popular again here at Summit high school. So if you ever find yourself bored, maybe picking up a hacky sack could be the solution.
