Orangutang is difficult to trace. The band only has six songs, five of which are on this album, “EP.” Additionally, none of the members have any traceable social media or musical projects outside of Orangutang. Having only released music in 2010 and 2014, this short-lived band somehow created a flawless album, despite “EP” being their first release. The album has an overall dreamy, lively, comforting sound with the singer’s voice being smooth and confident. Their combination of fun, humorous lyricism and unique sounds in each song results in a beautiful and compelling album. In “Bella” and “Bullfrog” Orangutang samples rain, trees blowing in the wind and animal sounds overlapped with fun percussion like tambourines and xylophone that make you want to shout, sway and dance. Additionally, “Bullfrog” uses literal and abstract lyrics like “I swelled my chest as you climbed up the tree/And left me wondering how” to spin an innocent story of wanting to be with a tree frog from the point of view of a bullfrog living on the floor of the jungle. “Bella,” on the other hand, is fast-paced and vibrant. The song talks childishly about running, jumping and feeling unconfined. The lead singer joyously exclaims, “I love running in the rain/It makes me feel like I’m faster” in a way that awakens a sense of excitement and freedom in the listener through his ecstatic tone of voice. The track “Ghost” opens with a twinkly yet haunting intro that leads into serene melodies and questioning lyrics like “Can’t you hear me?/I’m screaming in your ears” in a mysteriously deep voice. Surprisingly, the short length of the album aids in its perfection; if the album were any shorter, it would leave you wanting more, but if it were any longer, it would steal attention away from the greatness of each song.
