Billie Eillish has outdone herself again. “Birds of a Feather,” the holder of track four on Eilish’s album “Hit Me Hard and Soft” which was released May 17 seamlessly sews together her typical dark lyrics with a playful atmosphere, capturing listeners effortlessly as it displays an endless love.
The first, powerful synth beat, paired with Eillish’s spirited singing, creates a distant yet down to earth ambience that immediately raptures listeners. And the follow up, a quick paced tambourine-esque sound paired with a coy melody in the background which is constructed from what sounds to be a xylophone, renders many unable to forget its teasing tune for hours on end.
The lyrics, beautiful and cunning in their typical Eillish way, are a stunning and deadly representation of the sort of love Eillish wants. From lyrics like the forlorn feeling, “I’ll love you ’til the day that I die / ‘Til the day that I die / ‘Til the light leaves my eyes,” to the love-sent, “I want you to stay ‘Til I’m in the grave / ‘Til I rot away, dead and buried,” Eillish gives us a ghoulish interpretation of commitment. Even though the lyrics are a bit gruesome, the song still resounds beauty. There’s something magnificent, even fairly frightening, in the idea of this type of love, and this is the main reason the song is as alluring as it is.
Her words, which seem as if they’re echoing, or even fading, tie into the overall teasing aspect Eillish cultivates in this one-of-a-kind song, eventually creating a feeling of flirtatious longing that makes the piece as delicious as it is. “Birds of a Feather” bestows a unique experience to any listener who is lucky or smart enough to press play and will leave anyone gobsmacked in its bewitching tune.
