During the early-morning passing periods at Summit, a large line stretches through the cafeteria. Sleepy students shuffle through the cafeteria waiting for that delicious meal they’ll eat in class. With breakfast being the most important meal of the day, we wondered if something free could actually be both healthy and taste good. As students who had never tried the breakfast at Summit before, we were pleasantly surprised by the food and variety of options.
To test them out, we looked at the menu and realized how appetizing the breakfast options sounded. For a week, we tried different breakfast options every day to find the perfect meal for those days when the fridge is empty or we slept in too late to make anything before school. Here are the best breakfasts we found, rated based on taste and texture.
First Place: Bacon, Egg and Cheese Croissant
First, we have the bacon, egg and cheese croissant, a classic breakfast combo on a delicious croissant. This sandwich is packed with protein and is a great way to start the day with a nutritious meal. Other students at Summit agree, saying it is their favorite thing to get at school.
Sophomore Ruby Mitchell, who eats breakfast at school regularly said, “I think my favorite is the bacon, egg and cheese croissant. I get it whenever I get hungry in the morning.”
Overall, we would give it a 8.5/10. We both agreed that it was the best option for us, and we would get it again for sure. The croissant was a little soggy so we couldn’t get this meal a 10/10 but we would definitely recommend it.
Second Place: Chocolate Chip Coffee Cake

Coming in at a close second is the chocolate chip coffee cake. These coffee cakes are freshly baked and rotate flavours weekly, with the coffee cake flavour being the fan favorite. These items tend to disappear quickly, as they are definitely the top pick. It is a muffin-like square with chocolate chips inside and is a great meal to grab on your way to first or second period.
”I normally pick the coffee cake, it’s the best in my opinion so I get it a lot,” said sophomore Ben Baker.
While this breakfast is less of a balanced meal and more of a sweet treat, it definitely lives up to the hype that it gets from students at Summit. The chocolate chip coffee cake is a very solid option and gets a 8/10 for us, only falling short of first place for its lack of protein and size.
Third Place: Sausage and Cheese Breakfast Sandwich

In third place, we have the sausage and cheese breakfast sandwich with a solid 7.5/10. This meal is just as packed with protein as the bacon, egg and cheese croissant and is a perfect mix of savory and salty goodness. This sandwich came hot and wrapped in tin foil. Even though the sausage was cooked to perfection, we gave this meal a 7.5 because the cheese did seem a little fake. But we couldn’t really complain because the bun and sausage made up for it. For students looking for a savory, protein-filled breakfast, this meal is a fantastic option.
Fourth Place: French Toast Sticks

Coming in last on our list, we have the French Toast Sticks. These sticks come with a side of syrup to dip in and taste amazing. Although they are great, they are slightly too soggy and the syrup is too sweet, making it below average in our opinion. They could be better but we personally enjoyed them, so we rated them 6.5/10.
Honorable Mentions

When speaking with other students about what their favorite meals are, we heard some other meals come up multiple times. One item that received many positive reviews was the school’s variety of simple grab-and-go cereals.
Summit has multiple different cereals. We tried Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Honey Nut Cheerios but Blueberry Chex is another great option. These cereals are super easy to grab and match with the multiple milk options in the cafeteria. Summit carries chocolate milk, skim milk and 1% milk.
The cereals are the same as any store bought version. Honey Nut Cheerios are definitely simple but really good, causing us to rate them a flat 7/10.
We think the Cinnamon Toast Crunch was a lot more sugary than the Cheerios but really delicious. If you have more of a sweet tooth for cinnamon this is definitely the way to go. We would rate Cinnamon Toast Crunch a 9/10.
The Summit cafeteria always carries the same breakfast basics, but also has different options weekly. One special we heard a lot about was the apple frudel.
Sophomore student Jacob Jenkins personally loved the apple frudels.
“Those little cinnamon apple frudels, those are really good,” he said. “I get them a lot.”
Overall, the breakfast at Summit exceeded our expectations. There is something for everyone with lots of variety and different things to get, and no complaints especially considering everything is free for students. If you haven’t tried the breakfast here at Summit, we would highly recommend it to anyone.
