After years of faithful service, Bend-La Pine budget cuts have revoked the Summit library’s ability to provide accessible printing for students.
On Oct. 28, the district sent an email to Summit’s student body saying that students will no longer be able to use the printers in the library. The email did not contain any additional information about why students could no longer access their beloved printers.
“There’s situations that have come up where the school is trying very hard to save as much money as possible. They discovered that printing, not just for students, but also with teachers, costs a lot of money,” described Summit Librarian Kathrine Blue.
Many students were shocked to learn that printing would be a restricted resource from here on out. From projects to presentations the printers had students backs, the accessibility worked wonders for those who don’t have these resources at home.
Sophomore Olivia Swanston, an avid printer user, was extremely surprised when she heard this news.
“I thought that it would stay around forever. I feel it’s just a basic necessity like how they provide you with pencils and notebooks,” says Swanston.
At first glance it seems that our printer years are completely over, but that is far from the case.
“Students will still be able to print things, they just have to get the teacher to print it for them,” Blue explained.
The quick transition from unsupervised printing to going through our busy teachers will be a challenge to grasp over these few weeks, this new way of printing will be students’ option for free printing at school.
