The April showers brought along May flowers, which led to the spring sports seasons swinging into action. Most spring sports are wrapping up their season or have already concluded. The year proved difficult for many athletes but nonetheless, a sense of joy was found amongst teams in their respective sports. The Pinnacle caught up with players from different spring sports to see how this year went for them.

Baseball/Softball

The baseball season concluded with the Varsity team accumulating a record of 9-8. Meanwhile the softball team may not have gotten the record they hoped for but was still a great season overall. Softball doesn’t usually have a huge turnout in number for players on the team, except for this year.
“We were able to put 2 teams together for Softball this year which was fantastic, because 2 years ago we were only able to put 1 together. So that means numbers are getting better which is fantastic,” Bedsworth said, the Softball head coach.

Track and Field

The Track and Field season is still going on for some with invites to certain meets and hopes of qualifying for State. Summit Track and Field had 32 athletes receive invites to participate in the 6A state tournament, this is the most invitations Summit has ever gotten for athletes competing in state in school history. This year only the top 16 in each event statewide received invites to participate, so getting in is harder than it has ever been before.
“I believe it speaks volume about our program and growth for our athletes.” David Turnbull said, the head track coach at Summit.
Many athletes at Summit this year have had impressive seasons that deserve to be talked about. Malcolm Boyd, a Junior is a rising star amongst Summit track. Boyd is less than 2 seconds away from setting a new school record in the 100, 200 and 400 meter dash. If Boyd sticks to track there is no doubt the records are his. Magdalene Williams is another runner for Summit that has had an impressive season. Williams set a school record time in the 800 meter (2:08.45) that also earned her one of the top times in the nation.

Lacrosse

The Varsity men’s lacrosse season went as well as you could have hoped for. The men’s team went undefeated with a record of 8-0. Their stellar season earned them the rank of 5th in the State, the highest Summit Lacrosse has ever placed. Sadly with Covid restrictions still in place, Summit was not able to compete in the playoffs in Portland.
“I feel like we kind of got cheated out. The Portland schools are doing their own tournament and calling it State but they said we couldn’t play in it, which was really disappointing,” Connor Scott said, a Junior attacker/midfielder for Summit.
As a joke Summit lacrosse referred to themselves at 2017 UCF, a play on the College Football team, the UFC Knights who deemed themselves as National champions after their championship game vs Alabama got canceled.
This Summit lacrosse team didnt just play as a team, but as a family. When I asked Scott about the connection he feels with his teammates this is what he had to say. Practices would end with team bonding creating a tight family amongst the team.
“I would say even more this season, our team’s chemistry is really high which has been cool to be a part of,” Scott said.

Ultimate Frisbee

The Ultimate Frisbee team has been giving it their all so far this season. So far on the season the team has accumulated a record of 9-1. Just like other teams, Ultimate Frisbee has dealt with playing the same team multiple times. However, players are still making the most out of their time on the field.
“Beating South Eugene twice has been one of my highlights of our season, both games were very close with a final of 13-11,” said Harry Hobin and Evan Melner, two Sophomore players on the team.
While Ultimate Frisbee isn’t the most well known sport, the aspect of being a team is still there.
“We’ve known most of the guys on our team for a while, and even the new guys we feel pretty connected to on the team,” Hobin and Melner said.

Tennis

The girls tennis team had many girls achieve a winning record this season in doubles and singles. Overall the team combined for a record of 9-0 facing Mt. View and Bend High a total of 3 times. Varsity tennis player, McKenzie Klecker, achieved a winning season, going undefeated in her single matches.
“Tennis of course was fun but I think team bonding and getting close with the girls was the highlight of my season,” Klecker said.
Barbeques, going out together, making bracelets and of course competing with each other made this girls team very close on and off the court.
