Valentine’s Day is complicated. People have to sort out schedules and attire, and most importantly, pick out their evening plans. This issue is even more complex for high schoolers as they have to balance expectations with reality and are often constricted by both budget and living in a small town — only so many couples fit into McMenamins Theater.
So what are you supposed to do if you want more than your standard movie and dinner? Well, you could spring for a fancy dinner, but let’s be real, those meals aren’t exactly priced for a high schooler’s wallet. Well, look no further, for here are five date ideas (for you and your partner or galentine) that are bound to impress without hurting your wallet.
Homemade Pizza Night ($8.50)
Paris may be the city of love, but the Italians perfected the romantic dinner. Treat yourself and your date to a homemade pizza dinner and a cozy night in. It’s easy — with pre-done dough and sauce, all you have to do is shape the dough, add sauce, cheese and toppings and bake! For an extra romantic twist, you can form the dough into a heart before baking. This is one of the most affordable on the list, coming out to just $8.50 per person when you add the cost of the ingredients.
You can also combine this with other ideas for an extra special occasion that’s a fun mix of food and activities.
Candle Painting ($8)
For the more creative among us, you could always spend your night exploring a new craft: candle painting. By melting down colorful tea lights, you can use the bright wax as paint on plain or neutral candles, creating fun and personalized designs. Be warned, this is not for the clumsy as you’ll have to be careful dealing with the fire and hot wax.
Sometimes the best conversations happen over busy hands, and you’ll end up with a sweet, personalized present to exchange at the end of the night.
Arcade ($9)
Nestled into a cozy nook downtown, Vector Volcano Classic Arcade has all the old-school video games your heart could wish for. It’s perfect for those with a little competitive spirit as many of the games are two player. You just pay a flat rate of $9 an hour, so you don’t have to worry if you can’t scrounge up some quarters from in between your couch cushions. The arcade has soda, snacks and candy for sale, but if you want to make it a little fancier, the central location allows easy access to many of Bend’s restaurants.
Snowshoe Stargazing (Free)
One of the advantages of living in a certified dark sky city is our unimpeded access to the stars. So pack up your car with snowshoes or cross country skis, headlights and a thermos full of hot chocolate, and head out to one of the snow parks on the way up to Mt. Bachelor. Virginia Meissner Sno-Park and Swampy Lakes Sno-Park are favorites due to their warming cabins at the end of the trail. Here, you can point out your favorite constellations and stay warm at the same time, truly embracing the spirit of star-crossed lovers.
Violin Concert ($15)
What could be more romantic than being serenaded (by someone who actually knows how to play music)? While it isn’t your typical high school date due to the fact that concerts tend to be on the pricey side, you’ll strike the right chord with the musicophile in your life. This elegant experience is shockingly accessible for students as you can get a student ticket for a special Valentine’s Day concert being performed at the Unitarian Universalists Fellowship church. The performance is by Frank Almond, a violin soloist at the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, and tickets come with chocolate and roses.
Now you have no excuse when your date asks what you’ve got planned for the special day. There’s a little something for everyone, from homebodies to nature lovers and artists to gamers. And if you’re a little bit of everything, you can mix and match plans until you find one that fits just right. So grab your chocolates, flowers and Valentine and make this a night to remember, even if you are just a broke high schooler.
