On Oct. 6. at an assembly meeting, Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) voted in Boys Volleyball as an official sport, starting in the spring season of 2026. With this decision Oregon joins twenty-five other states that have already acknowledged boys volleyball.
This achievement can be accredited to the 51% growth over the past six years in the sports popularity nationwide. For the Summit high school Boy’s Varsity Volleyball team, this is a huge accomplishment.
“The past two years, it’s been a goal to help the sport grow and that way we could be approved [by OSAA],” says Senior varsity volleyball player Gavin White.
Being voted as an OSAA sanctioned sport means that the Boys Volleyball team will be provided with funding. Where in previous years they have had to collect and support themselves.
“As a club sport or emerging sport, funding is all on your own. When it becomes a sanctioned OSAA sport the funding can then come from the district or school,” said Quinn McAndrews, Summit Athletic Director.
But the recognition goes beyond funding for the Summit Boys Volleyball team, it shows that people notice and acknowledge the sport.
“It’s really good to know that the sport is growing, and more people are joining in. It’s nice to know that people care about the sport,” says White.
Other sports at Summit, such as Rugby, Lacrosse, Water Polo and others are hoping to follow in the footsteps of Boys Volleyball, to achieve this milestone as a high school sport.
