Have you ever been to an orchestra concert? Maybe not, but if you are sitting at home looking for some fun and free entertainment on Oct. 28, the Summit Orchestra is putting on a concert in the auditorium at 7 p.m. It follows the theme of a missing bass player. Here’s why you should go.
Summit Orchestra is something that many students are unfamiliar with. They have a concert coming up, with lots of work put into it, such as time spent rehearsing during class, access time and outside of school. With this much effort going into a performance, it is important for Summit students to learn about the program.
The orchestra is split into two groups: strings, for the less experienced, and chamber for those who have auditioned and shown excellent skills with their instruments. The two groups perform together to create a show where everyone of varying skill levels plays together.
Unfortunately, attendance is usually low at orchestra concerts, with audience members primarily consisting of family and friends of performers, and minimal student and public attendance.
However, orchestra director Stephanie Seed has remained optimistic and stated that “the audience has gotten better in the past few years. We’ve started putting up posters and using social media, and the concerts are listed in the announcements every morning.”
She also emphasized that the concerts are open to anybody and encourages students to invite their friends, family and neighbors to the concerts.
But what about the performers? Senior Ellie Safford, who plays cello for the chamber, enjoys performing. She is really looking forward to the next concert and hopes to see more people in the auditorium.
Safford mentioned that she has played the cello for 10 years now and is part of the orchestra to “learn new music, practice my instrument and have a community.”
If you are interested in going to a concert, pay attention to Summit’s morning announcements, as the dates for upcoming concerts are listed near the bottom of the calendar. Seed and the entire orchestra hopes to see you there.
