Welcome, freshies! It’s your first year of high school, and the world is your oyster. That is, if you can get over those nerves. You have every opportunity laid out before you and this wealth of options may seem overwhelming at first. So take a deep breath, grab your floaties and jump right in.
A big part of enjoying your freshman year is stepping outside of your comfort zone and making the most of every day.
“I’d probably say, football games are [my favorite events of the year],” said Summit sophomore Abby Lachman. “ I love the energy and also homecoming, probably. Just those big events where everybody’s together.”
These events can seem a little new and scary sometimes, especially if you haven’t been to them before. But sometimes, you need to trust that it’ll work out.
“I would tell [freshmen] to try something new without people they know,” said Lachman. “Expand out.”
Now is the perfect time to heed Lachman’s advice, as clubs are just getting started. Not sure what to join? In the daily emails, you can find a list of the clubs for the next day, and what classroom they’re in, so it’s never too late to join one.
Summit sophomore Harper Knoll joined track and field for the first time last year, and looks back on it fondly.
“Some of my favorite memories are definitely from doing track,” said Knoll, who competes in the discus. “Turnbull’s the best.”
So whether it’s joining a new sport, trying out a new club or just talking to someone unfamiliar in your class, freshman year is the year of opportunities.
