I love debut albums. They serve as the most genuine glimpse into what makes up the essence of an artist. “Section.80” is no different. Lamar’s top rate pen-game and grandiose vision for large concept-based projects is on full display with his 2011 effort. “Poe Mans Dreams” display his knack for clever entradas and fluid rhyme schemes, while “F**k Your Ethnicity,” the record’s opener, explores the rapper’s now famous ability to manipulate his voice in order to experiment and effectively tell stories. “Section.80” is Lamar’s hidden masterpiece, stuck in the shadow of his grander and more recognized “DAMN.” or “To Pimp a Butterfly,” but I believe it belongs there. Although not perfect, it’s accessible. It’s real. It’s Kendrick Lamar, love him or hate him.
