Summit’s boys ultimate frisbee team is headed to Corvallis, Oregon on May 17 and 18 for their state tournament. Every spring the OYU, Oregon Youth Ultimate frisbee league, organizes this tournament for cities around the state such as Bend, Corvallis and Portland. These teams compete in a two-day battle for the state championship title.
Ultimate frisbee is played seven versus seven on a field with a goal of bringing the frisbee into the end zone. Ultimate frisbee is a no contact sport. To score, one person must catch the frisbee in the end zone or take a maximum of three steps towards that boundary. The sport heavily relies on the participation and accuracy of one’s teammates. Since it’s difficult to move with the frisbee, the player who catches relies on teammates nearby to make the next move. A supportive teammate, sophomore Cooper Alkire, truly believes that the community aspect is the most important piece of ultimate.
“Getting to state is even more rewarding since we’ve been working and growing as a team,” said Alkire. “It’s the best part of the sport.”
The accomplishment of qualifying for these larger, more challenging tournaments is a testament of any team’s ability to adapt and learn how to rely on one another. The Summit Storm ultimate boys are prepared to take on the adversities of different teams they will be up against—and take them in stride.
