Summit Track and Field hosted its annual varsity invite meet, this year called Secure Storage Summit Invitational, on May 3. Twenty different teams were at the meet, making it one of the biggest events Summit has hosted. Although rainy weather was slightly problematic for the team, the conditions didn’t stop the Storm from performing top tier.
Three students placed first: Finn Miller in the Men’s Varsity 2k Steeplechase with a time of 6:45.91, Sophia Capozzi in the Women’s Varsity 3000 meters with a time of 10:36.45 and Anna Millikan in Javelin with a distance of 128 feet and 7 inches. Numerous other athletes placed second and third along with many PRs. The Summit Storm team placed second overall for both the mens’ and womens’ teams.
“I think it’s really a bummer because we have some of our best athletes out with injuries right now. But I think those people that were brought up to fill in those spots really stepped up and stepped in to give us those points,” said freshman Ruth Gobershock, who competed in the 100 meter hurdles and placed third.
Over 110 volunteers helped run the meet, including parents and junior varsity athletes.
“For the first time in a long time we had more than enough volunteers. It speaks very highly to our freshman and sophomore parents, and it gives great hope for the future,” said Summit Track Coach David Turnbull.
