Over 1,800 chicken nuggets, a room full of handmade jellyfish and a celebration of community—Summit High School’s Fun For All Club is hosting its first ever prom for Central Oregon students with disabilities on April 26 in the Summit Commons.
With an “Under the Sea” theme and a comfort dress code, the dance encourages students to wear whatever they feel comfortable. The prom starts at 5:30 p.m. and is free entry thanks to a mix of school funds, volunteer efforts and donations from businesses like Chick-fil-A and Bigfoot Beverages.
Club leaders Jordyn Berry, Ashlyn Rotge and Riley Weisgerber are all juniors at Summit and have been involved in the club since September. After only being given $100 by the district for all club expenses, they have raised funds with the help of Interact Club, volunteering at concessions and by working with local businesses to donate for events. As over 200 expected guests are coming, the club has had to expand their plans for the upcoming event, especially when it comes to food; Chick-fil-A has donated nuggets to feed the crowd.
The Fun For All Club focuses on inclusion and building community in Summit through events and sports. They meet every other Tuesday and are always welcoming new members. This prom is one of the biggest events yet—and a reflection of the student initiative and partnership throughout the year.
