Summit High School hosted its second annual Open Mic Night on March 5 at Thump Coffee.
The night kicked off at 3:30 with a performance from the school orchestra while Thump served coffee and food inside.
As only the second annual open mic, there was quite a crowd. From orchestra to jazz, as well as individual performances, it was a very entertaining night. There aren’t always a lot of chances to see live music, so this was not something people wanted to miss out on. And you could feel the community’s support with even people from other schools coming to watch.
“I think it was a really great opportunity for students to showcase some of their musical talents, and that was the goal of the event when I created it,” said Gemma Moussa, Summit’s junior class representative. “It definitely fulfilled the goals that I had in mind and I think it helped bring the community together.”
With all the recognition sports get at Summit, it was exciting to see all the musical talents our school also has. Just because there aren’t as many musicians as athletes, that doesn’t mean they aren’t as passionate.
“We don’t have weekly games like sports do and it’s important to showcase some of those talents because music is really awesome and we have a lot of talented people at our school,” said Moussa.
Next year, the event organizers should have more time to plan Open Mic Night making it an even better experience for people and performers.
