Skiing or climbing her way into her role as student body president, there isn’t much that could stop Alicia Watson. Mentoring the future leaders of tomorrow, and giving extra attention to the specific needs of clubs around Summit, Watson has dedicated her high school years to having a good time, and encouraging others to as well.
Watson has packed a true Bend lifestyle into just four short years. “Lacrosse, ski racing with MBSEF, volunteering, we dine together, social justice club, I’m trying to think of what else I’ve done,” remarks Watson.
While getting to every activity that Summit has to offer, she also lives a spontaneous life off-campus.
“I have a lot of really odd hobbies and talents that I kind of got good at that I have no business being good at. I DJ, I know how to play the guitar, I know how to sew, I’m also an emergency first responder, I guess that’s my fun fact.”
And throughout the chaos, Watson has remained a very good person to the people around her. The power she gained with her role as student body president, she decided to dedicate to clubs that weren’t getting “good feedback” from administrators.
“I figured now that I have a little more say or sway in decisions, if I get more involved in clubs they will also have that sort of power,” said Watson. “I know from running a club, you don’t get much help from [the] admin.”
On top of her heavy academic load, she’s managed to gain attention from teachers as well. “To know Alicia is to love her! She is positive, funny, and sincere. I admire how she is so authentically herself and passionate about any venture she pursues,” states Layana, an AP Language and Composition Teacher here at Summit.
Watson continues to surprise, and the more you talk to her the more you learn how much fun she manages to have on top of her academics.
“I have a dog, I love playing with my dog… I kind of just do whatever,” said Watson. “I’ve done a lot of scuba diving courses.”
Scuba diving is a pastime Watson wants to carry with her into college. She hopes to continue her education at The University of California, Santa Barbara or The University of Miami. Her dream is to earn her degree in Marine Biology, and travel all over the world doing her work in the ocean.
At the end of the day, Watson simply hopes to have a positive impact within her community–wherever in the world that may be. She aspires for everyone at Summit to get involved and enjoy their time here, striving for a better future for the world itself. If you ever need her, she’ll be in her 2006 Jeep Cherokee that she holds near and dear to her heart. Or maybe skiing. Or maybe rock climbing. Or maybe leading a student council meeting.
