“SCREAMING CRYING SLIDING DOWN THE WALL,” my social media is full of it. The proverbial sad girl music has exploded with popularity and taken charts by storm with artists like Gracie Abrams, Hozier and Billie Eilish all having at least one song in the top 100 since the start of September. All of these artists have one thing in common; their music is classified as sad and they’re all on tour. So with a ‘For You Page’ full of sad music, peers suggesting I listen, and access to the newspaper, here’s my review of the top 3 (according to spotify) “sad girl yearning crying hits.”
- Francesca – Hozier
While I was expecting all of the songs to be slow and weepy, this song was upbeat and happy, a contrast to its gut wrenching lyrics. “Francesca,” is a description of undying love and submitting yourself to the cyclical nature of loving something you know will hurt you regardless. Francesca is a dramatic song featuring powerful vocals and even more moving lyrics, sad girl music won me over on this one.
“Though I know my heart would break, I’d tell them ‘“put me back in it” darlin’.”’
- I Love You, I’m Sorry – Gracie Abrams
Coming in at 67 on the billboard top 100 this week, ‘I Love You, I’m Sorry’ is the hit of Gracie Abrams’ newest album ‘The Secret of Us.’ Emotions run wild Throughout the duration of this track, being strung through yearning, screaming, anger, frustration, denial and everything but the kitchen sink. This song combined strategic lyricism with catchy tunes and thought provoking lyrics. The sound of Gracie Abrams’ genius sticks around long after the song ends.
“Two summers from now / We’ll have been talking, but not all that often, we’re cool now / I’ll be on a boat, you’re on a plane / Going somewhere sane.”
3. Birds of a Feather – Billie Eilish
Last, but most certainly not least, is “Birds of a Feather” from Billie Eilish’s newest album “Hit Me Hard and Soft.” ‘Birds of a Feather’ hit me where it counts. With the tactical layering of vocals accompanying the thought provoking lyrics, this one takes the cake. Billie Eilish, kudos to you, because this one was awesome.
“I don’t know what I’m crying for / I don’t think I could love you more”
I’ve previously never been a sad, mopey music fan, but after two days of scouring lyrics and music patterns, it’s safe to say that the ‘Sad Girl Music’ genre earned a fan. Heavy metal next?
