When walking through Summit halls one is confronted by flashes of the Adidas Samba. With the seemingly endless colorways and aesthetics, many have turned to this sneaker for a simple everyday shoe. Despite an exhausting amount of microtrends, Sambas have seemed to push through and have grown tremendously in popularity. But every trend comes to an end leaving many to wonder, when will people move on?
The shoe, loosely resembling a soccer cleat, first grew in popularity in the 80s and 90s, when they morphed out of the soccer community and into streetwear style. These shoes make it apparent that while trends and styles come and go, it is possible for products to resurge or decline and since Sambas have already been a recurring trend for a while now, we may just see this course repeat itself. At this day in age, fashion is incredibly reliant on social media influencers and celebrities and many of them proudly rep the Adidas sneakers, increasing the shoes’ reputation. But social media endorsement can be a double edged sword, if influencers start referring to Sambas as “basic,” this label may cause their popularity to decrease.
However, there are many advantages to Sambas, they are relatively cheap, around $100, and are well known to have a multitude of color combinations. A simple black or white shoe can pair with any outfit, while fun blue or pink or red can bring a pop of color. Many other companies have attempted to replicate the sneaker and have had success, but still few companies have produced the amount of options that Adidas has. While Sambas are at large, the reasons for their popularity are clear so they may just be here to stay.
