Eliza Mclamb is ready for a change. Overwhelmed by the hot and alienating desert that is Los Angeles, she reminisces about her time spent growing up in Kansas in her new single ‘God Take Me Out of LA.’ Released on Aug. 28, the song is unlike most of her others, as Mclamb is typically described as an alternative artist. However it only takes a few beats of ‘God Take Me Out of LA’ to fall in love with its country and folk-like nature.
With heartwarming chord progressions the song begins as Mclamb’s voice fills listeners’ ears. Much like the rest of her discography, Mclambs songs sound and feel as though they are coming straight from her heart. She sings “and when I feel that pain/I need the sky to darken up and show me it knows my name/ I can’t feel the sunshine one more time/ God, take me out of LA.” Mclamb is tired of ignoring her discomfort in L.A. and is praying to be able to start fresh and shamelessly feel her feelings.
On McLambs’ ‘Stubstack’ (a platform used for creators to publish writing) she explains how she felt about moving to L.A. in the midst of a pandemic after spending the summer cleaning chicken poop and flying blindly down the dirt roads on her farm in Kansas.
“I was not strong in the way of an ox, but in the way of a foal—the heaviest thing was not mine to carry, but the profound beauty of a new world seemed ready for me,” McLamb wrote.
However, these feelings have since adapted. Similarly to before, McLamb has discovered that it’s her time to make yet another move. This one is somewhere much colder, and a bit closer to home.
Like most of her writings, ‘God Take Me Out of LA’ perfectly encompasses McLambs’ emotions in a way that makes listeners want to turn up the volume and sigh. How one can express themselves in such a beautiful manner is something to consider when tuning in to this lovely song.
