For the first time since the opening of Summit High School the tennis courts have been remodeled. “Before we updated the courts they were like, definitely the worst in Bend, let alone central Oregon” stated boys’ tennis head coach, Jake Oelrich. “The district definitely knew it was time the cracks that were on the courts were really big, and kids would sometimes roll their ankles on them”. The courts were also proving difficult during home games, sometimes swaying the results of important points. “We always warned them like, you know, look out. Here are the cracks,” said Oelrich. “It was pretty sketchy”.
The changes also follow a confusing prank-like hoax involving anonymous students putting couches outside of the courts. “The couches just showed up,” commented Oelrich, hinting that the stunt may have been organized from within the tennis program. The antics may have been a result of the constant complaints on the lack of spectator seating the former courts provided. Although the district eventually removed the couches, they served as a hilarious reminder of the unacceptable state the courts were in.
Summit’s tennis squad remains hopeful for the upcoming season this spring, and the new courts make them all the more confident for a repeat of last season’s success.
