A New Generation of Music
AI-generated Drake song captivates listeners
Another month, another Drake track captivating the masses—except this time, the emerging hit, “Heart on My Sleeve,” was released by an unnamed producer covering themselves in a white sheet, claiming the song was generated by AI.
The song originally appeared on TikTok, where a producer named “Ghostwriter” quickly racked up millions of views. The lyrics flow in a typical Drake fashion, with references to public figures like Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber. The beat may get a little repetitive, but it’s impressive nonetheless, if truly generated by AI.
The producer claims the vocals of “Heart on My Sleeve” were fully produced by AI vocal-switching technology. With the use of AI, publicly available audio recordings can be used to replicate an individual’s unique vocal inflections.
While the lyrics of “Heart on My Sleeve” were composed by a human, AI generated lyrics don’t seem too far fetched, considering the abilities of programs like Chat-GPT. This possibility makes staying true to a creative process infinitely more difficult for artists, if AI can produce the same result as their hard work.
Despite Ghostwriter’s claims, the exact origins of the hit are unknown. Some believe this whole release is simply a publicity stunt, meaning the song was actually produced by Drake and “leaked” to generate excitement.
However, based on industry backlash, the publicity stunt explanation seems unlikely. The song has since been removed from Spotify and YouTube, evidently over copyright claims. This new realm of music poses a difficult question for both artists and producers: when is creativity no longer genuine?
“The training of generative AI… represents both a breach of our agreements and a violation of copyright law,” said Universal Music Group, which represents Drake, in a statement expressing their displeasure towards the song.
While the future of “Heart on My Sleeve” remains uncertain, it’s evident that this new era of music is just beginning.
