Review: “Happy & Sad” By Kacey Musgraves

By: Brooke Leggat

Kacey Musgraves has always been my go-to artist whenever I want to feel a certain type of way. With songs ranging from tangy, country love songs to upbeat pop-ish country crossover, I just can’t get enough. It’s safe to say, I’m a pretty big fan.

Though I listen to all of Musgraves’ songs on repeat in the shower, at the gym, in the car, or anywhere else you might find me, one song has caught my ear more than the others.

“Happy & Sad” is a slow, heart-wrenching song featured in Musgraves’s Grammy-winning album, Golden Hour. The song recounts an often relatable situation of letting someone that hurt you back into your life.

The uneasy message of “Happy & Sad” will keep you on your toes. While the tune begs you to lower your car windows and roll your hands to the motion of summer waves, it also reminds you of the feeling of warm tears rolling down your cheek and heartbreak.

The melodious rhythm of guitar resonates with the excitement and purity of a fresh, new start, while its melancholic, broken-hearted undertone oozes the tragic reality of inevitable pain. “Happy and Sad” conveys how easily one can be caught in the moment, while subconsciously masking the cloud of underlying pain and toxicity.

While I could rave about every single word Musgraves has ever sung, this song in particular is perfect for any occasion. Whether you’re happy, sad, or lost somewhere in between, this song is perfect for you.
